The Everyday and the Epic: A Collective Iteration

28 April – 1 May 2026

The notions of the everyday and the epic are pertinent to photography and fashion as discreet and as combined disciplines. Photography and fashion are cultural mediators of both the banal and the profound, and undoubtedly shape our lives in ordinary and extraordinary ways.

Photography depicts the vernacular of everyday experience in a number of well-established and newly progressive ways, ranging from the everyday snap to the seemingly infinite digital uploads into virtual spaces for mass observation. Equally, fashion has an everyday application as we dress to function and perform our everyday selves, dressing for work, home and play.

As epic, the camera is party to events and stories of universally epic proportions, as well as individual occasions of significance. In gallery and museum spaces, the pages of journals, magazines or the web, we are presented with high production manifestos of photographic magnitude, often with the appearance of another time and another place.

Fashion is epic on the catwalk, runway or similar spaces, as collections are spectacularly designed and dressed up to move, shake and attract an ever-ready audience of bodies aspiring to transcend everyday life.

In combination, fashion photography presents us with spectacles from the vernacular through to the fantastic; images that contemplate the aesthetic of the nearby and accessible aspects of style, (sub)culture or social communities juxtapose against flights of fancy or propositions for better or different lives in another dimension, offering a kind of wish fulfillment or call for change.

The MA Fashion Photography course builds an academic and creative community around an expanded practice in fashion photography with a broad concept of fashion as material for the camera. This course attracts students from around the globe and has a vast network of successful graduates working professionally and internationally across creative industries.
